Facing off with Fatigue – Recommended Testing

"There are thousands of dollars of testing a doctor can administer for fatigue, but the results are sometimes vague," explains Dr. Hanley. "I would start with a thyroid panel, Free T3, and a Tsh, as well as a complete blood count. If it's been a while, you may need liver and kidney functions, but if you don't at least look at the basics, you won't have a clue where to begin seeking causes for fatigue."
For stubborn fatigue, it's important to start by ruling out any physical causes such as anemia, infection, or hormonal problems. Ask your doctor to consider exploring some of the following tests with you if your experience with fatigue is chronic and persistent:
- Adrenal stress index, available at one of 40 saliva-testing labs in the U.S. This involves taking a saliva sample every four to six hours for 24 hours. Available at ZRT Labs, Genova Diagnostics (formerly known as Great Smokies Diagnostics), and MetaMetrix Labs in the Northwest. Note that some states will allow a patient to order and administer these tests on their own.
- Allergy, food sensitivity, and parasite testing
- Blood hormone panel
- Blood thyroid panel; Free T3 and Tsh
- Complete blood count testing for anemia and infection
- Comprehensive metabolic profile to monitor electrolytes, blood sugar, blood protein, fasting insulin, and liver and kidney function
- Heavy metals panel
- Lyme disease testing: Western blot blood and urine test
- Sleep apnea test and REM monitoring
- Ultrafast CT scan of the heart – call 1-800-new-test for information
